First, you need to read the poem aloud. Get a feel for the meter, the tempo. Then, as writer, you know the mood of the poem, the music should kinda match that mood. Then look to see if you have a recurring theme, which could be the chorus or refrain, which is repeated several times in rock/pop/country songs. Then try to sing the poem. Tape it. If it sucks, erase it so that it doesn't influence your actions the next time you record it. Between recordings, do something to clear your mind, or wait a few days. After you have the melody for the poem, a musician can help fill in the chords and rhythm.

Well if it were me, I could turn it into one, however I also would be stuck on getting the melody outside of my head onto paper.
