By mis-directing your attention to what HE wants you to see, altering what you are seeing, and last but always popular....smoke and mirrors.

Illusionists work though distraction & disguise. I was very observant that he lifted the curtain to show you the elephant's foot. There was no real reason to do that other than to distract you into thinking it was still there. My guess is that it was a fake foot and it was then the animal was being guided away.
