Below are the ten largest lakes in the world. They are followed by their country/countries and in parenthesis by their sizes first in square miles and then in square kilometers.

    Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan-Russia-Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran (152,239, 394,299)
Called a sea because the Romans, finding it salty, named it Mare Caspium. Many geographers, however, consider it a lake because it is land-locked.
    Superior, USA-Canada (31,820, 82,414)
    Victoria, Tanzania-Uganda (26,828, 69,485)
    Huron, USA-Canada (23,010, 59,596)
    Michigan, USA (22,400, 58,016)
    Aral, Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan (13,000, 33,800)
    Tanganyika, Tanzania-Congo (12,700, 32,893)
    Baikal, Russia (12,162, 31,500)
    Great Bear, Canada (12,000, 31,080)
    Nyasa, Malawi-Mozambique-Tanzania (11,600, 30,044)

It's actually Lake Baikal : ) thats if you are counting VOLUME combined with FRESH water. By surface area- but with SALT water - it's the Caspian Sea. Although a 'Sea' it is landlocked so it's classed as a Lake.
The largest in SURFACE area AND Fresh water is - as my esteemed friend Highlander said - Lake Superior. : )

The Caspian Sea. It's called a sea but it's really a lake, because it's completely surrounded by land.

That's kind of a tough question since people seem to be divided as to whether The Caspian Sea is a lake or an actual sea. Being enclosed though, it fits the definition of "lake" better than that of "sea".
