Sleep mode is the closest you can get to Hibernation. It shuts off the monitor, hard drive, and almost all other components. It keeps power to the RAM only. When you press the power button again it 'wakes up' the computer, using the RAM image to restore what you had open/running. It saves power but still uses power.

A scrn saver merely puts a fancy image on the screen to save images being 'burned' into the monitor. Everything else runs in the background and not much power is saved.

    Hope this helps,
    Good Luck

I must correct that person that said standby mode turns of the hard disk, this is totally incorrect if you ever go to the power options of the computer you will see turn off hard disk and it will have never, if the hard disk was turned off then the computer would have to boot back up since no instructions will be available for the computer to come out from standby. The screen saver issue has already been addressed so i would not be redundant.

    I'd like to add:

While screen savers were originally designed to address the problem of monitor burn-in, this problem was solved on monitors many years ago. So, in essence, a screen saver is now nothing more than visual entertainment. It does absolutely nothing to help your computer - in fact, it can interfere with the normal operation of some functions, like defragmentation.
