I live in the Midwest right now, and no, it's not required to recycle everything and only trash food waste. We do, however, have an optional recycling program, and I use that the max extent that I can.

In my city we're rich enough to hire people to sort our trash after collection, but there is still place you can go and depending on what recyclables you give them you either get cash on the spot or a deduction from your garbage bill.

REcycling is not required here but we have bins provided for the different items our community does recycle.

It's voluntary here. For some reason, they refuse the plastic bottles in which motor oil and anti-freee is sold.

No, we can put food wastes in a composting bin to be picked up as well.

In Sydney, we recycle plastic, tin, and paper. Foodwastes are your own responsibility at the moment. Some areas have garden waste pick ups. Most have clean up facilities, whereby you can put out large household things etc. Clothing can be put in special clothing bins for charities.
