It goes back to the greek Goddess of Love. The planet was named after her and so everything else has to be feminine.

Planets were named my greek mythology and the roman/greek gods to represent each planet. Venus was named as Roman Goddess of Love, being feminine, a woman. Hence, everything applied to that planet is in femenine terms or names.
