Is it true that 100 million baptisms for the dead were completed by 1988?

    In the Handbook of the Restoration, (page 501), it is noted that twelve million baptisms for the dead had been performed by 1928, and twenty-three million by 1935.

    Given the Church's growth in membership and the corresponding advances in communication and information exchange, the 100-million-by-1988 claim is well within the bounds of possibility. Given the high priority that the Church places on the rite, it's probably a safe bet.
