  • In the Handbook of the Restoration, (page 501), it is noted that twelve million baptisms for the dead had been performed by 1928, and twenty-three million by 1935. Given the Church's growth in membership and the corresponding advances in communication and information exchange, the 100-million-by-1988 claim is well within the bounds of possibility. Given the high priority that the Church places on the rite, it's probably a safe bet.
