I would suggest a hardtail mountain bike, such as the Trek 4500, with hybrid tires.

You're not going to find a bike that will be good for both downhill and road biking. They are such polar opposites, and the only thing in common are the basics, such as 2 wheels, a frame, handlebars, etc... but even these parts will be drastically different for each discipline. The closest you might get would be a travel-adjustable XC or AM bike, and even then, it will severly limit your ability to descend fast while riding DH, and it will be ridiculously slow on a road. There is no such thing as a DH/road hybrid. Now, if you're not really talking about DH, but just casual trail mountain biking, then you might be able to get away with some kind of hybrid, but you're still making major compromises. You're better off buying two cheaper bikes than 1 more expensive hybrid that really won't get the job done.
