  • Yes, There were several church leaders that joined the Masons. The were approx. 3 lodges in and near Nauvoo, IL. According to the copy of the lodge minutes I read, Joseph attended only 3 meetings and on the third was elevated to a master mason. The member lodges had a tendency to elevate members too quickly as well as change some of their activities which offended and alarmed other Masonic lodges in IL. It's my understanding that at one point the member lodges were suspended by the state organization. The upstairs level of Joseph's Red Brick Store in Nauvoo was used at times for lodge meetings as well as other community activities and this does explain some regarding the later claim of Joseph introducing the endowment ceremonies in the spring 1844 to a group of individuals (all of whom were Masons...one from Springfield, IL)
