One of my older pc's had the same problem, and I just fixed it. I installed the os (Windows XP) on a new harddrive using the recovery CDs. I then connected the new harddrive as Master and the old problem harddrive as Slave. On reboot, the os on the new harddrive automatically restored the files on the problem harddrive. I then copied all the files that I wanted to keep from the problem harddrive to the new one. I then formatted the old harddrive to erase all data, so that there is only one legal copy of Windows XP on my pc. If file recovery is what you want, this might be your answer.
