Using higher octane means you will burn through the gas a little slower, and cleaner. Lower octane gasoline has more detergents, which are basically fillers. High octane will burn hotter, and so will leave less residue. This will mean less frequent spark plug changes, plug wires, etc. Having those things be cleaner will equate to better efficiency... therefor will burn less than with cheap gas and old plugs. If, however, you have been using cheap gas for a while, it is best to switch over to the middle grade type for a tank or two before switching to high octane, unless you do a tune-up. Otherwise, the residue that is present on the plugs will chip off and can clog your fuel filter and pump. This is why some people believe their car doesn't run well on high octane gasoline... they tried to switch too quickly and caused themselves unnecessary problems.
