it's just something that cats do, no particular reason. my cat scratches around her food to try to cover it up.i feel your frustrations the only thing i can recommend is to get a holderthat sits up higher to put your food & water dishes in, that way she can't knock it over. or you can get a really heavy dish to put her water in that she can't tip over. good luck!

My cat does the same thing, he also covers his food with the placemat i use under it. I could scream when he does these things, he's just weird.

Get a water dish that can't be tipped over, either one with a wide base or one too heavy for it to tip over.

my cat does it too! i have bought and exchanged 2 new sets of dishes this week, not being able to find one that she won't tip! Finally, we put nails in the floor around the base of the dish which would allow me to pick the dish up to change the water, but would not allow her to skid it across the floor. It's immobile now.
