  • I think it's a matter of useage and not design. The knife primarily to jab and the sword slash.
  • That's a great question. In medieval Germany, knives (messers) became bigger and bigger to avoid sumptuary laws that forbade commoners to wear swords. Thus a peasant could say "My lord, of course this is no sword, but my trusty knife", despite the fact it was as long as a sword. In fact the Kriegsmesser or Langenmesser were "knives" and nearly three to four feet long, and were essentially two handed sabers or falchions. So historically, there was no set answer to your question. :)
