This occurs due to the difference in the amount of carbonation. Fountain soda has less dissolved carbon dioxide and so it makes less fizz when the gas is librated over an ice cube.

Different restaurants have different percentages of carbonated water/syrup, than others. the best and strongest fountain soda i have found is at jack in the box. they, apparently run each at 100%. ice has no bearing, except after a few hours of natural melting. the strongest and longest lasting canned soda is coca cola diet caffeine-free. i have left a can open in a room for 3 hours and its still loaded with fizz and flavor. and, the next time you buy a fountain drink, try this........50% regular coke and 50% diet coke in the same cup. its the best of both worlds and it kills the diet coke taste. its really different.

pour the soda...THEN add the ice. You'll get Lots less fizz that way. I watch the stewardesses on the airplanes add the ice, then they pour the soda..then they wait for the fizz to go down, then they pour a litte more, then some more. Pour the soda first...THEN add the ice. That's wisdom. Try it.
