  • The reason you don't just use 'stop' as your safety word is because not everyone actually means stop when they say it. Some, like myself, like to say stop or don't and have their partner keep at it. I like the forcefulness. So, we use safety words (red is our word) that means "Stop!! This isn't fun anymore!!" and we stop everything we're doing. Hope that clears it up for you.
  • It also sometimes takes the fantasy element out of it. It can kind of be compared to the Top checking in with the bottom to see if she/he is doing ok. Instead of taking a break from the play to say in reality 'So are you doing alright?' the Top may just tap the bottom's head as a signal that's what they're asking, and the bottom may move their foot back and forth (an example). It's subtle.
