  • I am licensed to carry a concealed weapon and get pulled over for speeding a lot. I ALWAYS tell the cop I have a loaded gun in the car or on my person. I always hand over my carry permit with my drivers license and insurance as well.
  • Some states require CC permit holders to disclose to a peace officer that they are carrying. I don't know if Florida is this way, but if so, always inform the officer. Otherwise, use your discretion. Some officers prefer to know and others don't. In fact, even though most cops support "the good guys" having guns, many cops are more inclined to give you a ticket for your traffic violation if they know you are carrying. Other cops are inclined to get you on your way ASAP, and are more likely to overlook your violation. Of course, if you ever need to open the glove box in front of an officer, you should certainly inform him before doing so.
  • No matter what reason you get pulled over for, if your firearm is on you or somewhere in the vehicle, the first thing you want to do when the officer ask for your driver's license and registration is to put your hands on the steering wheel and inform them of your firearm and that you do have a concealed wepons license.
  • If you are stopped by the police, you give your drivers license and gun permit to the officer....first. This way, the officer will know there is a weapon in your vehicle and you have a permit for it. This is to give you and the officer a buffer zone or no surprises for either. This should have been explained to you, once you received your gun permit.
  • You should tell right off. You see alot on the show COPS that they get very upset if they get to the point of searching a car and finding a gun init and the person pulled over didnt tell them immediately. Especially if its found near where the driver is sitting. I think though if you are some type of officer. It would show on their computer screen when they run your license and then they probably would be more lenient on you. Personally, I live without guns in my life. Because it seems to me highly likely that if I had a gun in my house. Some kid would find where its hidden eventually. So I'm glad I have a gunless job. As a Christian I pray to God for protection.
  • It is a good idea to hand over your concealed carry permit with your license and registration - and to have all of the above ready before the cop ever asks for them. If he then asks if you have the weapon, you should answer his question as specifically as possible. The best way to answer this question, though, is to call the authority who issued the permit, and ask them what the local laws say about it.
  • depending on where you live the rules are different and do not apply to every situation. when i got my permit in south Florida, I was told don't ask don't tell and everybody's happy, unless you have a history of crimes cops don't have the rite to search your car and you don't need a permit in Florida to carry in your car, business or home. in your car it has to be enclosed in a holster or console or glove box. just don't make the mistake to put your other info in the same place.the bottom line is you never know what the cop hears or how he will react to you showing what you have, the best thing is to cross the bridge when you get there. Father of a cop.
  • florida has no duty to inform the officer.. however it's just a good idea overall to inform, especially if the motion of retrieving your registration puts your hand in the same spot as your firearm.
  • That would be the prudent thing to do.
  • I believe when you applied for your hand weapon permit, you were given a piece of paper stating the exact procdure you have described. If you are stopped, you hand the officer your drivers license, along with your hand gun permit. Depending on the reason the officer stopped you, will determine if the officer will seize your weapon. most officers will take possession of a hand gun, until the citation or interview is over. this is for his protection. If you are arrested, you will lose your hand gun permit upon conviction. This is also stated in that pience of paper. You did receive one, right?
  • I always tell the officer about the gun in my car, especially since one of their routine questions is "Are there any weapons in the vehicle?" Don't lie to the cops about a weapon. The two times I've been pulled over and told them about the weapon this is what happened: 1) they asked me to leave the vehicle 2) they asked me where the weapon was 3) they retrieved the weapon 4) they removed the clip and clear the chamber 5) they placed it back on my seat when it was time for them to leave.
