  • Well...it's more a British variation.
  • Yes you have, and the sooner somebody produces an English - American dictionary the better.
  • Nah, we speak good English, and the English speak British English. ;-)
  • It's basically the same thing, American english is more a dialect of the 'queens english' than anything else.
  • Naa, Americans just can't speak English properly : ) lol I don't mind about you calling it English (since it 'is' English, just with local alterations), but what annoys me is when you see two options: 1) English, 2) British English... Makes me want to punch whoever wrote it : D Such a stupid thing to say... "American's speak English, but the English actually speak British." *shakes head* No... Have another guess at who speaks 'English' out of the 'English' and the 'Americans' : P (It begins with an 'E') lol Meh... It's one of those things that annoys me much more than it should : D
  • Well, there's the American Heritage Dictionary of the American Language. Though it's actually "the American dialect of the English language." A dialect can be defined as "Any language you can learn to speak in one semester or less." From the viewpoint of an Iowan, for example, both British English and Ebonics (black English) are dialects. Most black Americans can speak both dialects, Ebonics and standard American, but would have to study a little to dig the Queen's English. And a Brit would certainly need to study to understand Ebonics, but not as long as to study a different language--even an easy language like Dutch. It's not unusual for a secondary dialect like American to become more important than the primary dialect, the Queen's English. Russian was also a later dialect than Ukrainian, but it is vastly more important on the world scene. But they are not "whole new languages." You can learn them in one semester if you know the other, so they are only dialects.
  • Yes and it should be made into a law that the official language of the United States is American English not Spanish like a lot of people think it is.
  • People in North Dakota speak English and people New Jersey speak English and people in Boston speak English, so do people in California and Texas. But if you put them all in a room together without any preparation they'd have a pretty difficult time communicating. No, it's all English.
  • Standard English is English that everyone who speaks the language can understand. Since English and Americans can understand each other if they use standard English, they both speak English. The difference is slang and other nouns that are different across the countries, so American English and British English are just different dialects.
