Question

Help answer this question below.

I am a recovering addict (clean 10 years). Back in the day, I was the biggest turd in everyone's eyes. Why do they always come to me for help when they have problems now?

They see the change in you and figure that you found some magical cure that made you not a prick (other than the indescribably hard work of facing your demons.) I've been sober 14 years, but luckily I don't have anybody except my father that knew me back in the day.

But thinking about it, wouldn't you rather be the person that people come to for advice, rather than the person that they are seeking advice ABOUT?

    Congrats on 10 years!

By going clean you've earnt their respect and they want to mend their ways and who better to confide in than an ex-pro.

Because they respect the fact that even though you went through some bad times you've bounced back. And your opinion/advice on certain subjects has to mean more than that of a person who has never experienced the things you have.

I believe you should take it as a compliment. Being a recovering addict, you could give some good advice to those who really want help. Congrats for the 10 years!!!!

  • Because you've probably been through a lot, and have a lot of experience. I find that people who have done some stupid things in their lives are the best at giving advice, because they can Honestly tell you "DON'T DO THAT! BAD IDEA!"
