I treat everyone the same. I generally don't notice levels unless every word in the response is misspelled or in caps or something like that. I read questions and answers, not age and levels.

I welcome them to the site. If i can be of help, i will be. I would be patient if the haven't got the hang of it yet, after all i was new once and people were very kind to me.

I try to welcome them if I know they are new. Now that your rank is not on a question it is difficult to know if a person is new right away.

I think it is good to try to help out a newcomer if they feel welcome they could become a very good long time contributor.

Jodie and StableBoy were two of the well established members who made me feel welcome when I arrived. Though I must say pretty much everyone was nice.

I'm always happy to see new ones. And since I can give so many points to members, if a new person gives a good answer, I'm very happy to give them. I remember how happy I was when someone gave me lots of points and I thought, gee, I wrote a nice answer, thank you! So if possible I want to reward them and encourage them to do good and join in with everyone. The sooner they go up levels, the more they will feel part of this community and stay longer, having a good time.

If newby gives a great answer, I'm very positive. If they don't seem like they are adding much, I ignore.

I think it's good to gently instruct them when they seem to need assistance, much like I was when I joined the site. I caught the attention recently of a young new member who thought he was on myspace or the like and was attacking me with juvenile antics. I pointed out that this site was for friendly people interested in finding information and exchanging ideas and hostility didn't really have a place. He either listened or left.

There are a lot of features on this site and sometimes it's hard to learn the tone or demeanor each of us has. Little signposts here and there for new members can go a long way.

I try to be friendly with them, but if they come here to troll I don't like them.

I try to give everyone breaks. I know that I really appreciate the help everyone has given me. I think of all my fellow ABers as friends.

If they are new and ask a stupid or apparently trolling question, I go look at their q & a.

If it turns out that they are trolling, I flag the lot.

If their q & a shows that I would not like them, I ignore them like I do anyone who annoys me. Of course, if later they turn it around, I change my opinion of them.

So, I pretty much treat a newcomer like an oldtimer. Good q & a, I like them. Bad, I ignore.

If I know someone is new I will cut them some slack. I remember when I was new..most people were very nice, but some were not so nice...to the point I almost quit. I didn't really fully understand the troll situation at first and couldn't understand why I was getting down rated at every turn. The trolls seemed to be a lot worse at that time.

  • I try and be nice and friendly and give everyone a break at first, because I know what it's like to be a newbie.

However, if you start asking offense (or just plain stupid) questions, then you will lose a lot of my respect and friendly demeanor.

I think back to when I first came to AB and how intimidating this large site seemed to me and how glad I was for the help I received, almost immediately, and I try to do the same for as many new AB members as I can.
