I always check clearance racks and sales, and then I have a set of shelves in the basement where I put each person's designated gifts. I buy my greeting cards for the upcoming month all at once. I prefer not to set foot in a store or mall from Thanksgiving day until January 5th or so. I can't stand crowds. I load up on everything we'll need, and only go to the grocery store for fresh produce, bread and milk. I also sing professionally, and I like to have as much of my Advent and other holiday time as free as possible for gigs. I'm already booked for 3 weekends in December.
