  • No. Sheriff's Dept.'s usually handle things that are outside the scope of normal police duties, i.e. Corrections Officers, prisoner transfers, evictions, serving summonses, etc.
  • No. In all counties, the sheriff has responsibility for the county jail and for serving warrants and other legal papers. In metrotype counties, the sheriff usually has no patrol or other police duties. Those are handled by the police department. In smaller (in population) counties, the sheriff may have police duties in unincorporated areas that do not have a police department. There would be little or no savings in cost by eliminating the municipal police departments; the slack would have to be taken up by an expanded sheriff's office, with expanded costs.
