I worked in a place that sold electrical supplies as my first job. I did filing and other clerical things for six months. Along came another job for a mortgage company doing much of the same. I think doing office tasks is a good job and you get to work with people that are much older and more mature.
Avoid food service. It tends to become self-limiting. Retail is a little better, but the best hope is to get on as an intern in the area you want to study in college.
Any place that will hire you and pay you good money.

Nothing taught me more about the value of an education than earning $3.85 an hour at Burger King.
