Im trying to make an account on a website (and it does this everywhere, not just on one site) and at the bottom it says type in the verification code from the box above. Can you tell me why the captcha image wont show up?

I believe it would probably scan the image file bit by bit and then try to interpret the information based on colour and placement. That would be how a computer is able to take a scanned, handwritten document and convert it to a word processor file. Captchas, however, are designed to be more difficult to interpret than simple handwriting and therfore more complex programs are required.
As CAPTCHA scanners evolve to be more intelligent, programmers are going to have to learn how these scanners work, and find ways to 'fool' them. This of course will be an unending battle.
