The church did not accept the Word of Wisdom as a commandment until after the Saint had arrived in Utah. I don't know if Prophet Joseph did or did not drink beer or wine. I do know that the Saints brought coffee with them across the plains. I would suppose that the consumption of alcohol, though not forbidden, was frowned upon.

Yes, Joseph Smith did drink alcohol and he did smoke. From what I understand his drinking and smoking angered Emma and Joseph prayed about it. Thus he was given the word of wisdom. The word of wisdom was never intended to become a law of the church, it was a guidline on eating healthy.

Yes, he did. But one needs to remember the WoW was never a commandment, it was a guide for the people to follow in order to live healthy. God gave us free agency to live the way we like, he does not dictate to us what we are to eat or drink. Our choice.
