In the play/movie "Dreamgirls", there is a character named James "Thunder" Early. Is this character based on a real person, and if so, on whom is it based?

    I was wondering the same thing. I would have thought James Brown but Eddie's character dies in the 70's.

    Eddie Murphy dresses and acts like Marvin Gaye in some of his performances. Marvin Gaye was wild enough to do a lot of the antics Eddie Murphy performed in the movie.
