Does a gray hair turn gray or does it grow in gray?

    I think it turns gray too. I have one that is half and half - and the root end is dark while the grown out end is gray (truly absent of color).

    It turns gray. What happens is that the individual hairs lose their pigment, so the remaining color is gray.

    Empress of Everything Ever

    Hair doesn't actually turn grey it grows lacking colour pigments and your hair appears grey against the background of other hair that still has colour. So actually your hair when it looses all its colour pigments will appear white or silvery.
