Help answer this question below.
You would mostly need a different transmission, a transfer case & a differential on the steer axle. However, the 4x4 model probably has a sturdier frame & so it wouldn't be worth the money for a conversion when you can buy this exact truck for 8,000 or less. I know because I did.
why do some of you assume they need a mechanic. just because they asked a ? like this doesnt mean this person isnt mechanically inclined. matter of fact I fixed a friends vehicle the other day that an actual auto mechanic couldnt figure out what the problem was. Took me all of 10 minutes to figure it out. Pretty said that an INDUSTRIAL mechanic could figure out a problem that an AUTO mechanic couldnt. Anyways to the OP

You're reading What would it take to convert my 2000 Ford F150xlt toa 4wheel drive?

A+, except the frame is exactly the same. Suspension and brakes, may be different, however. Also, you will need a new driveshaft. The driveshaft will be completely different depending on the components, spline count etc. Like you said, it's far easier, and probably cheaper, to just buy a 4 wheel drive.
