  • The charm of a mom and pop store has such a great appeal. You never know when you walk in how the food is going to be. Recently I went to a small restaurant in Claysville Mo. They served the best food I've eaten in a long time. Fried chicken with green beans, fresh out of the oven rolls, cole slaw, out of this world apple sauce mashed potatoes and gravy. It was a great big feast for the senses. It saddens me to think that my kids will not try these kinds of places in favor of McDonalds.
  • Mom and Pop unless its run by Gomez and Morticia.
  • Mom and Pop or individually owned for sure. They HAVE to be good or they don't stay in business. They can't rely on massive marketing budgets and name recognition alone to keep them alive.
  • A smaller chain or a Mom and Pop.
  • I've eaten the best food at mom and pop kind of places, where they care about their food personally and most everything is made in house, from scratch.
  • Mom and pop anytime, real people and real food
  • I love the ol' Mom and Pop places. There's nothing like walking into your favourite place, and the waitress who's been there for 15 years says "Hey Alyson, Hi Jason! Good to see you again! Hi, Ian... you're getting so big! Are you getting your scrambled eggs again?" and brings us our coffee and my water - without ice - without even being asked.
  • Mom and pops can be awful on occasion, but in my experience, they are usually far better than a chain. I am mourning some of my favorites, which have died out when the kids or grandkids didn't want to carry on the family tradition. One of those restaurants put out a cookbook before it died, but the other is lost along all its wonderful recipes.
  • I would have to say a chain is usually better (on average), but that chains are always 'good' while mom & pops are sometimes amazing. Sadly some of them are absolute crap.
