As far as I know, the McLaren F1 is the fastest and most expensive road car ever built. There are very few of them. It is basically an F1 car changed just enough to make it street legal. However, the price starts at $1 million.

Revision: It's now the Bugatti Veyron 16.4. With 1001hp, 4 turbo chargers, 16 cylinders, and a top speed of 230+mph, it's the fastest out there.

The fastest production sports car in the world is the amazing AWD Bugatti Veyron, a 16 cylinder 8 litre with quad intercooled turbochargers. It has 1000BHP, 1000Nm of torque, and can do 400km/h.

    You really gotta define "car."

The Thurst SSC has the official record, but it has more in common with the Concorde SST than a family sedan. It's practically a twin-engine fighter jet without wings...

World-class top fuel dragsters will do over 300 mph - and get there in under 5 seconds - but I don't consider them "cars" either.

I imagine someone out there has taken a NASCAR chassis and powerplant and added turn signals, wipers, headlights and bumpers - does that count?

An SR-71 Blackbird is "automotive" in that it moves (is "motive") under its own power ("auto") and it goes Mach 3+.

I hope you get the answer you are looking for, but I think you did not adequately define the class.

Well, first fastest needs to be defined. 0-62mph? probably the veyron, in 2.5 seconds. the chrysler me 4-12 may be quicker but it was stillborn, as in it didnt make production. the veyron, with a measured top speed of 253 mph is the fastest production car ever. note the word production. again, people said the me 4-12 would be as quick but it never made it to thr production line. the veyron is also the most powerful available road car, its 7998cc w12 engine (2 4.0 v8s bound to a common shaft) putting out a grand total of 986 bhp and 950 ft lbs of torque, its closest competitor for torque is any mercedes ending with 65 AMG, with 782 ftlbs of torque.

just had to put that in.

Disregard all so-called street legal drag cars that race in the states because they're not gonna be legal in 96% of the world anyway. Only a dickhead would want more than 400 horsepower on the street anyway. The streets are for regular drivin, not fancy drivin!

  • Fastest Land Car Speed (Guiness Book of WR)
The one-mile (1.609-km) land speed record is 1,227.985 km/h (763.055 mph), set by Andy Green in Thrust SSC in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA, on October 15, 1997. Thrust SSC (Super Sonic Car) completed its record-breaking run in a matter of seconds, but was the culmination of six years of work and a six-week on-site campaign. Two and a half years of research went into the shape of the Thrust SSC, and building the most powerful car ever took a further two years and 100,000 man-hours.

WHO: Andy Green in Thrust SSC
    WHEN: October 15, 1997
    WHERE: Black Rock Desert, USA
    WHAT: 1,227.985 km/h (763.035 mph)

Shelby SuperCars' (SSC) Ultimate Aero was officially named the Fastest Production Car by the Guinness Book of World Records. It's the first American-made car to hold the title since the Ford GT40 in 1967.

The 71-year-old driver of the Ultimate Aero, Chuck Bigelow, reached an average top speed of 256.19 miles per hour on two passes--one in each direction--on a two-lane road in rural Washington state. It broke the current official record held by the Koenigsegg CCR by 15.09 miles per hour, and the Bugatti Veyron's unofficial speed by 3.63 miles per hour. And although the Ultimate Aero broke the record, the SSC folks said the car has the potential to go even faster. Langley Full Scale Wind Tunnel testing calculates the vehicle to be aerodynamically stable at speeds of up to 273 miles per hour.

In order for a Guinness hopeful to contend in the "production car" category, the car must use pump gas and conform to all DOT/EPA regulations, including those for emissions and safety.

The Ultimate Aero uses a proprietary, twin-turbo V8 that produces 1183 bhp and 1094 foot-pounds of torque, with a drag coefficient of .357. The car is fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires, which, according to SSC testers, show little signs of wear at speeds from 200 to 257 miles per hour on public roads.

YOU ARE ALL WRONG!! The fastest production car is the American-built SSC ULTIMATE AERO TT is a supercar built by Shelby Super Cars and the fastest street-legal production car in the world. It was built in order to rival the new Bugatti Veyron with speeds of over 408 km/h (254 mph) and a 0-60 mph time of 2.78 seconds (for the Ultimate Aero TT version). The company and vehicle are the brainchildren of Jerod Shelby with Athan Aridas who helped him, who spent over seven years designing the Aero. The car is the world's fastest production car at 412 km/h (256 mph)[1], a speed reportedly achieved on September 13 2007 in West Richland, WA. The results of this test, verified by Guinness World Records on October 9 2007, gave the SSC Aero the world's fastest production car title.[2]

The SSC Ultimate Aero TT first appeared in 2004 under the name 'Aero SC/8T'; the Ultimate Aero is a limited production version of the Aero, offering even higher performance. From various sources, only 25 Aeros will ever be produced, but the sources conflict on actual models. The base Aero model is priced from $239,000, while the Ultimate Aero would cost well over $650,000 (as of 2007

If you mean the fastest car available to the public.

According to LeftLaneNews, the 1005hp Barabus TKR is now the world’s fastest car — rocketing from 0-60 in just 1.67-seconds with a top speed of 270mph.

    http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/07/21/barabus-tkr-takes-over-as-worlds-fastest-car/

If you mean the fastest car period.

The Thrust SSC (for Super Sonic Car), which has twin jet engines like those used on Phantom fighter planes. The car packs as much power as 1,000 Ford Escorts. It needs parachutes to help it stop. Andy Green rocketed into the history books by becoming the first person to drive a car faster than the speed of sound. His average speed: 763 miles per hour!

CCR broke the record for the fastest production car in the world, having attained 387.87 km/h (240.91 mph), breaking the record previously held by the McLaren F1. The record was held until September 2005 when the long awaited Bugatti Veyron broke the record again at 400 km/h (248.5 mph), though this has yet to be proven.

    Bugatti Veyron 16.4
When your car costs more than $1.2 million, travels over 230 mph, and hits 62 mph in 2.5 seconds, you do not sit in a passenger cabin — you sit in a "survival cell."

The "survival cell" is the heart of the Bugatti Veyron, billed as the world's fastest, most expensive and most exclusive factory-built car. It will arrive in the United States beginning early next year.

In addition to the previous answer given by geek860

The McLaren is powered by a BMW 6.1 Liter V12 engine producing 627 hp with a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 230-240 mph.

The original McLaren F1 was started in 1991 and 64 cars were made. The LM model was introduced in 1993 with 5 cars built. The GT model had 3 cars. Finally, in 1995, the GTR was introduced, and over the next 3 years, 28 cars were built. Unfortunately, production stopped in May 1998 after only 100 cars were built.

    http://www.bmwworld.com/models/mclaren.htm

"Officially the world's fastest production roadcar with a logged speed of 240.1 mph, the McLaren F1 also holds the record for the fastest lap speed on a UK circuit: 195.3 mph.... 1998: Broke own record at Ehra-Lessien, Germany in the McLaren F1 XP5, taking it to 240.1 mph"

Well, the fastest production car in the world is a misnomer. You can add aftermarket products (approved by the auto maker) that will change the car. For example, the Dodge Viper has an aftermarket package that can be added by Venom industries making it the Dodge Viper Venom, one of these cars actually outran a Maclaren F1. So, I guess it all depends on what you call a production car.

Well, as has been said it depends on your definitions, of course theres the Hypersonic X-43A which utilises the Scramjet engine or any vehicle pioneering PDW engines (pulse detonation wave).
Cars, yes the Thrust SSC is the fastest but hardly practicle its basically an aircraft that can't fly, there's Sammy Miller's Vanishing Point dragster that did 0 - 100 in 0.5 and is the fastest drag racer to have ever existed.
Fastest production car at the moment is anyone's guess..a stab in the dark, the Veyron hasn't even been made yet it's still being developed, briefly the TVR Speed 12 was up there capable of at most around 248mph.
Fastest road legal car...from stock engine specification is the Oldsmobile Aerotech with a top speed of 278, unfortunately finding one of these cars from 1987 for sale is like looking for a needle in a field of haystacks.
Closely follwing that is the Callaway Corvette Sledgehammer with a top speed of 256.

Modified cars...well there are Pontiac Firebirds that have been done to exceed 300, Mustangs with Fox turbo systems that can do the quarter mile in 7.1 at 198 think of its redline speeds...

Volkswagen has formally announced the production version of the long-awaited Bugatti Veyron at Monte Carlo in June 2003. Staying true to the concept that was displayed at the 2002 Geneva Auto Show, with small changes such as air outlets behind the front wheels and slightly redesigned headlights. Expected to be very pricey indeed, the Veyron marks the truimphant return of Bugatti under the leadership of the Volkswagen Group.

Little has been spared in the way of interior luxuries, such as a full leather cockpit for two people, and other basic amenities missing in the McLaren. But it detracts from the original mission of the Bugatti - to be the fastest car in the world, no matter what.

The production Veyron retains the record-breaking 1001 DIN hp (987 SAE hp) output from its 8.0L quad-turbo W16, with 922 lb-ft of torque, but it narrowly missed its weight target of 3410 lbs, weighing in at 3520 lbs. With a power-to-weight ratio much better than a McLaren F1, performance claims of 0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds, 0-186 mph in 14 seconds and top speed of more than 250 mph seem believable, making it the new fastest production car in the world for the 21st century. Sure, there are are numerous tuner Skylines and Corvettes out there that can go just as fast, but they are haphazard individual jobs.

Other notable new entries would be the Porsche Carrera GT and Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren, but they are not expected to even top the McLaren F1 in performance. The resurgent Bugatti brand raises the exotic car game to a whole new level.

wwe r talking about road cars arnt we

You are all wrong. If you wanna get specific, Top Secret of Osaka, Japan had their Top Secret Supra up to 408km/h on the British M1. It is still a production car.

barabus TKR 0-60 in 1.67 sec top speed of 270 mph 1005hp 6.0 v8 twin turbo. this is the fastest PRODUCTION car in the world. f**k the viper hennessy 800 n the venom 1000 which is only .25 seconds faster on the 0-60 than the 800. or f**k all these cars its all about F1 cars. now those babys hit 0-100 n back to 0 in less than 5 seconds. best handling... hit 90 degree turns going 90mph. over all F1 cars are the best in everything except maybe top speed or against the veyron from 185 n up in acceleration.

I'm not sure if this is a car, but the Jet Threat (yes, a Hot Wheels car) has jets that make it move. Indie 500 cars are incredibly fast (over 300 mph). The fastest available street cars are (I think) Cobras. Those can probably move an easy 150-200 mph.

Koenigsegg is, in fact, a Swedish manufacturer, not German as sometimes mistakenly thought.

^^^ thats the site proving it all^^^ it is amazing nothing on this page matches it not eeven a saleen

Repeat after us, "Zero to 60 in 2.43 seconds." That's the amazing stat Hennessey Motor Sports' new Venom 800 Viper smacked down in a recent track test in Texas. Just how quick is that? It'll take you longer to say the stat than for the Venom 800 to do it!

Besides the Land speed record the fastest cars would have to be the Bugatti veyron and the koenigsegg ccx which is just about as fast as the bugatti veyron. They are about evenly matched up but the bugatti might have better 0 to 62 but the ccx will probably have a higher top speed, of 254+ so it can do the same if not better than the bugatti.

I used to think that the Veyron was the fastest car with that incredible top speed, but I have just listened to some news about a new production car that has a top speed of 270 mph, that is around 432 kph, it has a 1005 hp engine and a 6.0 liter V8 twin-turbocharged with dual intercoolers. I can´t remeber the name of the car but I think it is Barabus TKR, it was supposed to be introduced in the British Motor Show.

Check it out in this page: http://www.leftlanenews.com/barabus-tkr-takes-over-as-worlds-fastest-car.html

The fastest STREET LEGAL car is amazingly a modified Vauxhall Victor (see it on U-tube:

Built in the UK, this is the fastest road-legal car on the planet with a 9.3ltr V8 that generates over 2,000bhp. Red Victor One can do 0-60mph in 1second. Yes, 1 second. It leaves the Maclaren F1 in its dust over a quarter of a mile – almost four seconds faster. There is just one downside though: 5 miles per gallon. Still, I’d love a spin.
