My boss is on vacation. I can come and go as I please at work. It's 3pm and I'm bored. I am tempted to just go home. But there's a colleague of my boss who likes pretending she's in charge, so I don't wanna get caught by her. Should I leave?

You should stay. It sometimes means more to a boss what you do while their gone, then when they are ther to see it! Is it really worth the chance to have your boss think you have poor work ethics? If your bored, do some odds and ends you've needed to do, clean up your work space, clean up your boss's work space. You can always find something to do. And Smile real big at the boss want to be! :)

No, dont give the bitch the satisfaction of 'reporting you' to the boss when he/she gets back.

No stick it out, just imagine the pleasure she would have in relating your supposed transgression.

No, you should stay. Even though your boss isn't there, you should still be there. Find something to do, and stay as long as you would have if your boss had been there.

Of course you should, after all if you're 'child is home sick with a high fever' then what person would actually keep you there? >_> ;).

Are you being paid to be there? Then stay there!
It shouldn't matter if you are being watched like a little kid or not. If you need a baby sitter to make sure that you are doing your job, then you don't deserve the job.
I am sorry, but a 'good work ethic' is not an abstract thing. It means that you understand that to cheat on your time card is theft and shows you to be a person with low values that no boss wants in their employees.

Hahah, you know whats weird? I'm actually contemplating the same thing. My boss left for vacation a few hours ago and a couple other managers aren't here either. Pretty much the only one who checks up on me isn't here and my coworker just told me to leave early lol. I think I'm going to leave in a few minutes here, usually I'd leave in 30min but maybe I can avoid rush hour this time! :D
So, my advice to you is leave if you can without getting caught! If your work entails you to be going around to different departments and stuff then just go because she can't really catch you, you could be somewhere else working lol. (That's what I'm going to say anyway)
    Good Luck! Cheers ;)

OK, let's forget the moral high ground and being holier-than-thou (see above). Let's be normal for a while.

Go if you can get away with it. The best thing would be to encourage her to leave early and then you leave as soon as her car is out of site. Alternatively, invent an appointment - for example, car at garage for service, dental, husand or whatever just rang and they have broken down - use your imagination. Or hold your head for a bit and make sure you place packet of headache tablets where they can be seen then have your migraine.

Alternatively, you could do none of the above and stay until hometime which will allow you to preach from the moral highground and be as dull as dishwater.
