Why do people jump in elevators? What is this supposed to do?

    Supposedly, if an elevator is going up and you jump hard enough onto the floor, it will stop/go down/break? I'm pretty sure that's an urban myth, though. People who jump in elevators that are going down are just idiots. And people who hop about in elevators for no reason are just plain happy.

    It's not supposed to "do" anything. If you jump as soon as it's taking off or when it's coming to a stop, you'll feel funny when you fall.

    For example...

    If it's going down and you jump as it leaves, there will be a longer fall on your way down.

    If you jump up when it's going up and it's coming to a stop, your feet will hit the ground closer than you expect it to.

    The elevator WILL stop if you jump hard enough... not sure why, but I've experienced this several times first hand. Try it.
