If being on high places makes you uncomfortable, it may just be a rational fear, or caution. If you refuse to go on any high places or, when finding yourself on a high place, begin panicking and clutching onto things that seem secure.

When I was small, they built a diving pool at the local centre. It had a 10m tower. When I was small, I used to go to the top and jump off. It was scary to look down, but it didn't stop me. One day, however, I got to the second level, and noted that someone had painted the steps two different colours. Suddenly I panicked. I felt that it was unsafe to go any further. I ran down. From that day on, I could not even force myself to go beyond that point. It got so bad that, even if I thought about a high place, I would begin to hyperventilate. It got to its worst when my children were small and we went to a well known lookout. Though the path was wide, I panicked and threw myself against the rockface, and could go no further. I was petrified that my children would fall off. Years later, I went to counselling for something completely different, and found that the phobias I suffered from came from the same source. Now, I can handle heights (still don't like them much, but don't have acrophobia any more.
