  • The concept of a space elevator allows for a structured mechanical system that joins a geostationary orbiting platform to the ground with a series of electrical elevators. If it were possible, we could enter into an enclosed booth at sea level, push a button and get boosted into space just like taking a 60 mile elevator ride. To build one, you would need to find a material or design that is strong enough to sustain itself against the strength of earths gravity and allow you to erect a tower 60 miles high. So far, due to engineering limitations our tallest structures don't even reach 2000 feet in height.
  • The concept of the space elevator was invented, for lack of a better word, by the science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke. The concept and a description of how it could be executed is described in in his book "The Fountains of Paradise". Take a swing past your local library and sign out a copy.
