Most stereotypes are based on the fact that someone knew someone who was like that. Otherwise NO they are not. Just assumptions about an entire group of people because a select few act in a certain manner.

"Stereotypes are rarely completely accurate, based on some kernel of truth, or completely fabricated." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotype So no,they are not based on fact. They are based on one or few bad apples within that community. Many people are stetreotypical towards the Muslims as terrorists and violent because of the terrorists being the most destructive at the moment are Muslims. Islam, like pretty much all major religions, teach kindness and respect, the few who follow the odd passage that says the opposite take those passages out of context and cast a shadow over the entire religion. Stereotypes are based on individuals and applied to communities not based on communities and applied to individuals because how many people are prejudiced against Muslims yet still have the odd few friends?
