If I had to choose between one or the other, I think I'd be able to handle the roaches better than poor maintenance. At least I could put out baits, traps, etc, to keep the roaches somewhat in check. But with a poorly maintained apartment, you don't know what's going to go wrong next...and it may be dangerous.

I'd take the poorly maintained. You can always find some cheap stuff to improve the apt yourself, whereas you can't really do a damn thing about the roaches.
-
You can kill roaches more easily than you can address maintenance issues. There may be hidden maintenance issues you don't even know about. No apartment should be rented with either. If you choose the apartment with roaches, alert your landlord to the problem and take pictures for any future action. Usually a bug bomb and strategically sprayed insecticed can handle the problem.

Of one or the other... I'll deal with the bugs! They sell traps, and baits at Walmart! Some pets also make great bug-killers!
-
Roaches. Plus the if you have a maintance staff you can always ask them to address the issue. If not, as previously suggested, there are always cheap bug traps and killers at some stores.

Baits don't work- take it from me- I lived in a Bronx apartment for 4 years in college! Take the poorly maintained apartment at least its not gross and you can always fix it up. Nothing kills an appitite and gives you the creepy crawlies more than walking into your kitchen to fix something to eat and seeing roaches scatter across the floor/stove/counters/fridge. One time I got in bed and realized there was a baby roach on my clothes! Plus it is kind of embarrasing when people come over. I would NEVER live like that again. I get sick just thinking about it.

no roaches.

take the one with the bugs, you can kill them. i lived in a place with a lazy landlord for years and it was terrible.

Roaches?? the answer is PIF PAF....
-
poorly maintained one is worse. Roaches can be taken care of.
-
I would think an appartment with better maintenance staff and roaches, at least you can see the problem, goodness knows what problems you could face day in day out if the appartment is poorly maintained.
-
to be honest neither. Ask a friend to stop at theres for a while get a job and earn some cash. You only need £10,000 to buy any house, the rest goes on a morgage. but if you had to choose, choose the roach one. At theast that can be taken care of. ~ aged 15 and helping for life.~

The one with the roaches is worse - you will NEVER get rid of them. The are not only in your unit, but in others as well. Killing them in your unit will only solve the problem very briefly. I'd take the one that was poorly maintained and make some light improvements on my own.

I would take the roaches. You CAN get rid of them, or at least minimize the problem. Boric acid (I think it is) will repel them and if you keep a very clean kitchen and house they shan't hang around as much. They shall go where there is readily available food. You can never get rid of them but you can reduce them to a minor annoyance. I am speaking with the voice of experience here. Also, if you take the one with decent maintenance staff they might, with a bit of prodding, spray for roaches. I have lived in places with bad maintenance staff to the point where I had to get into Maryland tenant/landlord law to get essentials, like the stove, fixed. It took SIX MONTHS to get the toilet fixed and was to the point where, if I stepped wrong, I was in danger of falling through into the apartment below. Finally it was fixed when I was about to sue for a safety hazard. I would take the roaches any day because they can be controlled.

Well I have lived in places poorly maintained WITH roaches..eww..it was BAD...so I would go with the place with a better maintenance staff..either way one thing I learned is document any problems on paper, or photo..so you and the management stay on the same page with. the issues... Roaches can be controlled but it only takes one bad apartments for them to travel to yours...but there are traps, foggers..etc you can use.. of course a well maintained building should be spraying regularly anyways..

The roachless one

We live in a poorly maintained dump with spiders, mites, carpenter ants and the odd centipede, but no roaches...by some miracle.:)

Go with the roaches. When I finished univ, I sold my soul to get a flat in Manhattan, but it had roaches. A couple of weeks later and some hard work and I never saw a roach again while I had the place even though neighbors still had roaches. Start with boric acid and put it in every crack, nook and cranny; then go to sealing TOTALLY any possible points of entry, it isn't that hard to do and what a sense of satisfaction.
