I'm not too sure what ill side effects you are talking about but to whiten your eye you need a drop with a vasoconstrictor, this constricts the visable blood vessels in your sclera (white part). If you've had ill effects from other drops you may have had a reaction to some other active ingredients such as antihistamine, which are often found in allergy eye drops. So the only advice I can give you is to ask your chemist for an eye drop with a vasoconstrictor and no other active ingredients.

Visine with the active ingredient tetrahydrozaline will whiten the sclera of the eye by vasoconstriction. However, as with most pharmaceuticals introduced to the human body, with continued use, one will develop a tolerance and require more of the active ingredient for the same effect. With prolonged use, very little effect will result with use. If the pharmaceutical is discontinued, a reverse over reaction can result.
