How did the town of Gans get its name?

    If I'd had to guess, I'd have guessed Gans was from German "ganse," goose. But I'd have been wrong. It's either a plural or a possessive (apostrophe removed) of the surname Gan.

    Without the "s," the surname Gan could have any of a dozen derivations.

    Gans is a town in Sequoyah County, in the Fort Smith metro area.

    The community was named for brothers Charles and Swimmer Gan.
