I'm British and need to learn to drive a.s.a.p. for a work promotion. How quickly can I realistically do this?

You can learn to drive in a day, but you need years of practice to learn to drive well and safely. I don't know what the licensing requirements are in the UK, but it takes a written and a driving test in the US to get a driving license. You might be able to pass the written test in a day, but the driving part will take some practice.
