  • No, dying your hair will not cause baldness. Gray hair is not linked to baldness. To figure out if you might have baldness issues in the future, look at your mother's brothers, her father, and her mother's brothers. (Your father doesn't count. Baldness has been linked to the mother's line only, so far as I know.) My brother (Irish heritage) started getting gray at age 17. It's not that uncommon. Don't be scared by it. Dye if you want to, but never never your eyelashes or eyebrows. Special dyes are available for beards and moustaches.
  • I have a close friend who turned totally white-haired before the age of 30. Occasionally, she will dye her hair just to change things up. But, she has become real comfortable with leaving it as is. Of course, her hair is TOTALLY grey. Not many people get that. We usually get just enough to make it noticeable. So, I say dye it, if you want. But, my cousin says he would trade places with us ANY day. He went totally bald at the age of 25.
  • My brother started turning gray at 16 and is nearly all gray now at 26 - he used dye for awhile but found it to be alot of trouble - so just go gray - it is acceptable for guys to be gray young
  • If you are 20 and going grey, the best thing you can do at this time is accept it, and move on. Otherwise you are going to be one of those people look at and think "hmm, dies his hair, trying to fool himself"
  • I think it's fairly normal to start getting gray hair early if it runs in your family. I started getting gray hairs as a teenager and now have quite a few, but it only shows if I part my hair on one side. Do you have blond hair or dark hair? If you're blond, it probably doesn't show as much to others (I'm dark-haired and it's obvious).
  • My grandmother's hair was completely white by the time she was 22. She dyed her hair for 25 years and then decided it was too much trouble; I think I'd have given up a lot sooner than that. Grey hair isn't the end of the world, but if you're really concerned about it, dying it shouldn't cause baldness.
  • My friend started to get gray hair in junior high. He started to dye it. He used the cheap store-bought hair dye, which is harsher on hair than salon dyes. At first, his hair looked as it did before but over time, his hair became damaged and frizzed out. His hair used to be very straight, thick, and smooth and now it looks like a fro. If you really want to dye it, always get it done at the salon and always condition your hair to prevent too much long-term damage.
