Tore the quad tendon from the kneecap. After FINALLY getting it diagnosed right (about 6 weeks), surgery to repair, in hosptial for 4-5 days, rehab center 6-8 weeks with external fixator (I called it a "towel rack") holding knee straight (walking/PT WAS painful - think the knee was slightly out of alignment with fixator), sent home and next day removed EF and put leg in removable, adjustable splint (hospital bed at home), over next 6-7 months had physical therapy 2-3 times a week, slowly getting to where I could bend knee 90 degrees (where it's remained for 2-3 years, VERY slowly loosening). I had foot problems, too, and use a scooter and wheelchair to get around long distances - That's not ALL related to knee problem. Ligament damage is usually easier, probably less painful, and takes less time to recover from. Not exactly sure what they do there, but I've heard some commercials about knee ligament surgeries where the people are back playing sports within about 6 months.
