R.E.M.
you have to go way back. Indie has some folk. Pete seeger music was in the hipster scene in the 60s. Indie derives from that scene that we tried to bring back. When I think of sonic youth I think of noise. When I think of the smiths I think pop. When I think of Indie I think of cat power or kings of convience.
The Velvet Underground. I'd say.
pedro the lion, the white stripes, modest mouse, radio head etc
None. Indie was a tag for "Independent Label" artists. There was no genre of indie rock as such until the Music Industry decided it was going to cash in on the independent scene.
e.g. the Stone Roses were an indi band on a tiny label (Silvertone if memory serves) whereas Radiohead are Parlophone(EMI) - not exactly independent.
Most supposedly Indie bands are all signed to majors or to major subsidiaries. Indie dies when it became popular because well it had to by definition! What passes for indie now is just pop-rock, it has been around forever!
Radiohead.
R.E.M,hands down, they put collage radio on the map.Although Buddy Holly was pretty independent.
the violent femmes.
oasis,blur,soundgarden,radiohead,the verve,the stone roses
The Pixies. They influenced pretty much all modern indie music.
