Bactrim DS is usually the drug of choice for a Staph infection. You should go back to your doctor and tell him the Doxy didn't work.

Well, Bactrim DS is the choice for treating a staph infection, however alot of other factors play a role in determining what medication will actually work. You need to determine if the infection is a staph infection or if it is MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus), due to the fact that MRSA may be resistant to certain antibiotics. The only way to determine what type of infection you have is to have a culture done. This can be done in your doctors office. Your doctor can do a Culture & Sensitivity test by swabbing the infected area and sending it to the lab where a culture is grown. This determines type of bacteria of the infected site. Then the lab will test the bacteria against different antibiotics to determine their sensitivity and resistance. Which basically means that they can determine what antibiotics WONT work and which antibiotics are susceptible and WILL work. At times a doctor may prescibe two antibitoics at one time such as Bactrim and Doxycycline or even may prescribe a stronger antibiotic called Clindamycin which has shown to be successful in treating Staph and MRSA. Well i hope this information was helpful to you. Good luck.
