No, and I especially think that the accent from the Carolinas sounds sophisticated. It is that twangy Arkansas hillbilly sound that makes people think they sound unintelligent. I live in California, and the hip hop sounding slang is the most ignorant sounding speech I've ever heard. They have the hillbillies beat on sounding dumb.

It was somewhere near Mendenhall I think, off of state hwy 28? maybe. I remember a little town called Pinola as well. People were pretty cool, even to a California guy.

That is southeast of Jackson our capital. I am about 250 miles Northwest of there...a little town in the Delta called Cleveland. You speak of it like it was some time ago. Did you live here or were you visiting? I have had a few sips of "white lighting" and quickly discovered unless I wanted to rot my stomach I would stick to something a little less toxic...LOL I love living here. It is a relaxed, friendly place and there is something truly special about the southern culture. YOU just have to live it to understand I guess...LOL :)

I drove through Misissippi a few times as a truck driver back in the day. The people were very nice.

I think it's really charming when a female speaks it. Kind of country when a man speaks it (like in music). In Japan the people in the South, Kasai (Western Japan) speak with a drawl type accent. The sentences are melodic so when a female speaks it, it sounds very charming. The Geiko (Geisha) and Maiko of Kyoto are famous for this accent.

Not less intelligent, but I do think some of it is over exaggerated for tv, like Paula Deen.

Yeah...TV doesn't help. One need look no further than the "Dukes of Hazzard" to see how the media helps shape the perceptions of the masses.
Avatar Taylor Mar, 17 2008 at 10:01 AM
Trust me. NOT over-exaggerated. I have family that makes Paula Dean sound like a Yankee.

Thanks Taylor.

I guess it really does depend on the person. 'Round these here parts...the more metropolitan people tend to frown upon their "less-refined" brethren.
Avatar Vannie prays for babycakes . Jul, 23 2007 at 09:37 AM
i guess it won't be an issue if people tend to be around like minded people.others just need an excuse to show that they are superior than their brethren.

No, because I also have a southern accent. However, it does make someone sound less intelligent when they combine bad grammar with a southern drawl. I think a southern accent can sound both classy and unrefined, depending on the context.

I have never thought that. I know quite a few people with a southern drawl. They are all highly intelligent, from what I know of them.

I think there's a stereotype associated with southern accents and stupidity, at least for my generation. And we got that sterrotype from TV, specifically, all the dumb people of Mayberry, Green Acres, Dukes of Hazard, etc.

No, certainly not. I think they're less intelligent when they don't use real words though, or say dumb things like "the internets" or "My name is George W. Bush".
