Help answer this question below.
I think it's really charming when a female speaks it. Kind of country when a man speaks it (like in music). In Japan the people in the South, Kasai (Western Japan) speak with a drawl type accent. The sentences are melodic so when a female speaks it, it sounds very charming. The Geiko (Geisha) and Maiko of Kyoto are famous for this accent.
No, and I especially think that the accent from the Carolinas sounds sophisticated. It is that twangy Arkansas hillbilly sound that makes people think they sound unintelligent. I live in California, and the hip hop sounding slang is the most ignorant sounding speech I've ever heard. They have the hillbillies beat on sounding dumb.
Not less intelligent, but I do think some of it is over exaggerated for tv, like Paula Deen.
oh no. i love to hear that.i love when someone speaks with a southern accent. i have a few of my friends speaking that way and i am trying to imitate them.
No, certainly not. I think they're less intelligent when they don't use real words though, or say dumb things like "the internets" or "My name is George W. Bush".
Only if his name is Bush!
No, because I also have a southern accent. However, it does make someone sound less intelligent when they combine bad grammar with a southern drawl. I think a southern accent can sound both classy and unrefined, depending on the context.
I have never thought that. I know quite a few people with a southern drawl. They are all highly intelligent, from what I know of them.
I think there's a stereotype associated with southern accents and stupidity, at least for my generation. And we got that sterrotype from TV, specifically, all the dumb people of Mayberry, Green Acres, Dukes of Hazard, etc.
No, my favorite uncle was from Alabama and our entire family thought he was the wisest man we knew. And I have worked with people and had teachers from the south, so I don't associate intelligence with an accent.
Being from new York, not at all. In fact I automatically feel they are more friendly and easier to talk with.
Nope, no reason to judge a person by an accent.
Accent does not equal intelligence.
Having a closed mind and living in a repressive environment will stifle ones intellectual ability
whereas it will not have room to blossom in a more
open environment.
We all talk the way we do because we learned how to talk
like the others around us when we were in our developmental stages as youths.
I suppose where this question really is leading, is the
known fact that the educational system in many parts of The South is lacking as compared to many parts in The North and the West Coast. One could make the case that since someone grew up in an environment less conducive to learning, that by using a generalization, it could be possible to stereotype a population as such and identify them by the manner in which they speak.
I certainly do not think of someone as less intelligent by how they talk, just by what they say and what they tend to talk about.
i was thinking and actually southern people can sound intelligent, i think what it really depends on is your chioce of words
I don't think someone is less intelligent unless they are acting like it. And I've heard both unintelligent and intelligent Southerners speak.
It may not be my favorite accent, (mostly because the super strong ones are very hard for me to understand) but really, I have nothing against those who speak with it in any means. =)
No it is content not accent that makes a person seem intelligent or dumb.
Not less intillgent just diffcut to talk too my cousins in mississippi is horrible to understand just horrible no offense though they say the same thing about my notrthern talk

You're reading Being from the Southern U.S., I an keenly aware of the "Southern Drawl." Do you automatically think someone is less intelligent when he/she speaks with a Southern Drawl?
Comments
Is it coincidental that people in the South in most countries are said to speak with a different dialect? It's the same way in Korea.
