Under constant stress over a long period of time, usually at elevated temperatures, the material becomes plastic, even if the force is much less than the force required to yield the material immediately. The plastic deformation occurs to relieve the stress on the material, and is due to vibration of the molecules at the microscopic level, which have enough thermal energy to rearrange their positions as they vibrate out of their original place randomly.
