Yes it is insane, however that is what america is turning into. Noone wants to step on other ppl's toes for fear of being shut down. So now we have all the groups which "help" the "underprivelaged" and in the end they just end up hurting the rest of us.

A psychotic mental patient may see a doctor and prescribed medications for his illness. prescribing is one thing, making the patient take the medication, is totally another. People cannot be forced to take their medication. The results? just as you have described above. There is no answer.

I have never heard of the right to refuse medication if you are in a locked psychiatric ward on an involuntary certification. If you refuse to take your medication, you are forced to take it. If he was in on a voluntary certification, he has the right to refuse medication. There is a problem even if he had been on his medication in the hospital. Odds are, when he left the hospital, he would not have taken his medication and STILL killed his mother.

I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) that the laws on forced medication differ from state to state. I also want to say that this would be a rare incidence. Less than 3% of violent crimes are attributed to persons with mental illness. He was no more likely to commit this act than anyone else. The media tends to lead people into believing things, rather than believing the facts.

Where did this happen?

In nebraska, My wife entered the hospital voluntarily. After 28 days of not taking Meds(after the insurance was discontinuing payment), they held a state mental health board for committal. They first gave her no choice on taking her meds. They gave her shot of a similar medicine that normally brings her back. She came around, and they didn't confine her to a longterm state care facility. But the board committal held for a term of one year.

Yes, the legislators who made that law should have been forced to take their meds!!

I still side with civil rights. For every one of your example, there's thousands who's personal freedom are maintained. It might be you someday being denied your rights! - BTW: "insane" is a legal term - not a psychiatric one.
