I'm not sure that question can even begin to have a satisfying answer in less than a page, but picture a nice, beautiful wedding cake that a baker spent his entire life perfecting, except the cake is the world's economy is the cake, and the baker is the post WWII modern world. Now picture a gang of hungry sugar-addicted toddlers being cut loose on that cake, except the sugar addiction is stupidity and the toddlers are the entire world's population. The aftermath should be metaphorically similar.
