  • While there's a lot of history that probably plays into it, the ultimate fact is that there is no compelling reason for them to do so, and it would be a logistical nightmare. It would also cost a LOT of money, and perhaps most important would raise some very interesting questions on both the state and federal level. In short, there's nothing to gain by doping so, and there are many potential problems in attempting it. Shultz, there would be benefits to a reunification of Korea. There really aren't any in the case of the Virginias.
  • Each state gets 2 senators in congress regardless of population. By staying seperate, the Virginias get twice the vote. Of course, even if that wasn't the case, I agree it would still be really expensive. The cost of just replacing flags nationwide would be enormous ;)
  • there is a desire by some Virginians for reunification - the obstacles? politicians. there are not enough of them willing to risk loss of personal power, and it would be enough of those elected that would be needed to bring it about. true, the Virginia's would lose 2 US Senators, but the representation in Congress of a reunified Virginia would change in nature from what it is now. a thing desired by many of the divided Virginia. the idea is popular with some, but is dismissed by the powers that be. not until there is a popular movement by voters to make reunification an election issue will it be done, or even considered. there would be cost savings. for example, one Department of Transportation would cost less than two, etc.
  • It was a very nasty divorce XD
  • Because the WVa seceeded from VA because the Anglo-Saxon gentry of the Tidewater had been taxing the Scotch-Irish of the Appalachians while giving them nothing -- much like what happens in PA today (Harrisburgh, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh consume the limited substance of the counties of the hill country) and there is no reason for them to believe that that wouldn't happen with re-unification. They had wanted to be free of Virginia for decades; it was only the Civil War that gave them an opportunity to do so.
  • Return the STOLEN counties of Berkeley and Jefferson counties! They do not belong in the Mountaineer state. They were truly stolen by West Virginia. Half the state of West Virginia had no desire to secede from Virginia. It was just the northwestern counties on the Ohio river who planned all of this, and took advantage of Union occupation and the fact that most of the men in the southern counties were in the Confederate Army. East Tennessee was much more ardently pro-Union than was most of western Virginia. Yet, no state for East Tennessee! I'm no fan of the Confederacy or the cause they fought. I just think it an unconstitutional crime that Virginia got ripped of its loyal counties. Two wrongs do not make a right. I wish some fancy lawyer would appeal the constitutionality of the state of WVa. It was never truly decided upon in Va V. WVa, the supreme court in the years afterward merely acquieced to Republican leadership. Even Abraham Lincoln thought it likely that WVa secession from Va was unconstitutional.
