  • im not surprised, my father was from poland and he was one of them
  • 7-29-2017 Did you know literacy mostly results from Christian missionaries teaching people to read the bible? The only reason Russia has an alphabet is that Saint Cyril invented it so he could print bibles in that language.

One of my best friends went on a mission to Bangkok Thailand to teach teachers how to speak English

I suspect he's the guy that posted that 10 Windows question
    • Ice man
No, that was a guy from Manchester.
  • So does that mean they can only read every other page, or every other word ? : )

Some countries literacy rates were less than 20%! I guess that works for keeping the masses ignorant although admittedly that happens anyway!
  • Yea, USA
    • Linda Joy
      Wrong
  • According to the US Department of Education, 19% of high school graduates in the US can't read. What's that tell you?
    • Linda Joy
I wonder how many of those are special needs children?
    • Linda Joy
13% of all public school students are special needs. But that doesn't necessarily mean they're the ones that can't read.

What does it say when you graduate HS and can't read? I don't think the small percentage of special needs is relevant.
  • Yes. For example did you know America has an Arabic literacy rate of only 1%?
    • Linda Joy
5 countries in the Arab region have an average illiteracy rate below 50%. The overall average Arabic literacy rate is 77% however I noticed the literacy rate for Arabic women is on the rise and in some Arab countries it's as much as 87%. Much progress is being made.

As long as they keep their burkas on.
  • That is unfortunate indeed. But I would like to point out how often people speak in terms of "the average." When to take an "average," means exactly that; fifty percent above, and fifty percent below. So caution is required, when considering statistical information.
  • Yes. May we all contribute to world literacy increasing
  • USA is in the lead!
    • Linda Joy
      Wrong! We're 86%.
  • I'd have to say that that is a critique on leadership all around the planet for it to be that. Keeping people dumb is done so much anymore, it truly is ridiculous.

I think it has more to do with parenting, first. Schooling and access to schooling second.
