Help answer this question below.

I have a 1990 740 GL. I just recently nociced that the Overdrive indicator went on and i felt the car shift gears. it does that off and on. I was wondering what makes it do that and if it is a very serious issue and what can be done about it.

    the most common fault is the connection to the solenoid (under the car and fied to the overdrive) has broken or is otherwise not good. This is usually caused by the cable work hardening due to heat etc. Five minutes will usually put this right.
