Yarmulke is the Yiddish name for what could also be referred to as a skullcap in English. The Hebrew term for the same head covering is kippah. Choice of one term over the other may be determined by one's ethnic origins, whether one's family spoke Yiddish or not... Jews with close ties to Israel might be more apt to use the Hebrew term in this day and age. Most Orthodox Jews that I know say "kippah," although I have certainly heard both terms many times. Non-Jews are probably more familiar with "yarmulke" though.

Yarmulke or yarmelke. Pronounced ya-mi-kuh (sorry, that's the best I can do!). Is described as a skullcap worn especially by Orthodox and Conservative Jewish males in the synagogue and the home according to the dictionary.

Yarmulke.. pronounced.. yamica... The reason they wear it is because to remind them that God is above them... If you go to Jerusalem.. you can't even approach the Western Wall without a hat of some kind... if you dont have one, they will give you a cardboard kippah/yamica...

It is called a Yarmulka, which is based on two ARAMAIC (not Yiddish) words- Yerei (fear) and Malka (the King), i.e. it's there to remind Jewish men that G-d is above them at all times.

Israelis call it a Kippa, referring to its dome-like shape (Kippa = dome in Hebrew).
